Hepatitis B – Symptoms, Causes, Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, Treatment
🔵 What is Hepatitis B? 🔵
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver, and it is caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma world wide if left untreated.
🟡 What are the Causes/Risk Factors of Hepatitis B? 🟡
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) that causes hepatitis B infection is transmitted through unprotected sex, sharing contaminated needles, and mother-to-child transmission during childbirth.
🟢 What are the Signs & Symptoms of Hepatitis B? 🟢
Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or lethargic is one of the early signs of Hepatitis B. The liver's compromised function can lead to increased fatigue and a general sense of weakness.
Jaundice: A yellowing of the skin and eyes, known as jaundice, is a classic symptom of Hepatitis B. It occurs due to the buildup of bilirubin in the blood when the liver is unable to process it effectively.
Abdominal Pain: Some individuals may experience discomfort or tenderness in the upper right side of the abdomen, where the liver is located.
Loss of Appetite: Hepatitis B can cause a loss of appetite, leading to a decreased desire to eat, which can contribute to weight loss.
Nausea and Vomiting: Feeling nauseous and occasionally vomiting are common symptoms, especially during the early stages of the infection.
Fever: Mild fever can occur in some cases, indicating an immune response to the viral infection.
Muscle and Joint Pain: Individuals with Hepatitis B may experience muscle aches and joint pain, which can add to their overall discomfort.
Dark Urine: The urine may become dark-colored due to the presence of excess bilirubin.
Clay-Colored Stools: Stools can become pale or clay-colored due to a lack of bilirubin reaching the intestines.
💊What is the best treatment for hepatitis B? 💊
Antiviral Medications: Currently there are five nucleoside/nucleotide analogues (NAs) approved for the treatment of CHB, including three nucleoside analogues (lamivudine, telbivudine and entecavir) and two nucleotide analogues (adefovir and tenofovir).
Interferon Therapy
Vaccination: For individuals at risk of Hepatitis B, vaccination is an effective preventive measure.
Liver Health Management: Lifestyle changes are crucial for individuals with Hepatitis B. Avoiding alcohol and certain medications that can harm the liver is essential. A well-balanced diet and regular exercise can also help maintain overall liver health.
Monitoring and Regular Check-ups
Liver Transplant: In severe cases of Hepatitis B-related liver failure or advanced cirrhosis, a liver transplant may be considered as a last resort treatment option.
