Chronic kidney disease, or CKD, is a serious condition that affects 15% of adults in the U.S.

Early kidney disease usually has no symptoms…

… but as the disease progresses, it can lead to kidney failure and increase your risk for heart disease.

You can take these steps today to manage your kidney disease and take charge of your kidney health:

Meet with your health care team, even if you don’t have symptoms, for help managing your kidney disease.

Bring a list of questions, challenges, or concerns to discuss with your doctor.

Ask about telehealth.

It may allow you to get an appointment with your doctor or specialists more quickly.

Manage your blood pressure,

take medicines as prescribed,

and avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen and naproxen.

Work with your doctor or a registered dietician to develop a healthy meal plan.

Make physical activity part of your daily routine.

Aim for at least 30 minutes, but even a small amount can make a difference to your health.

Manage stress. Try activities like meditation or seeing a qualified mental health care provider.

Use techniques that work for your lifestyle.

Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.

And quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes can make kidney damage worse.
