How to Trim a Sylvester Palm Tree

Things Needed
Gloves
Spray Bottle of Bleach

Wide Mouth Long Handle Loppers
Rake
Wheelbarrow

Warnings
Disinfect your pruning shears before and after each use so as not to spread any types of tree diseases to healthy plants.
Do not use a machete in place of pruning shears. Machetes can easily knick the trunk of a date palm and allow Thielaviopsis trunk rot to infect and kill a palm tree.

Tips
Keep loppers sharp so they cut, rather than tearing, palm fronds, fruits and flowers.

Trimming a Sylvester Plam is tedious work at best, but we at The Tree Planters want to give you a heads up on some things that are important to know. First it is safer to make two cuts. This is done to avoid the vicious

1 Pour one part bleach to 10 parts water in spray botte. Spray the solution so the liquid covers the loppers cutting area. Allow the shears to soak for a few seconds to disinfect them.

2 Put on gloves to protect your hands.

3 Pick up any palm tree debris that is underneath the tree and around the trunk. Gather fallen fronds with a rake and place them in a wheelbarrow. Make sure you do not step on any of the fronds. This is very important because the fronds have extremely long thorns that will inflict a severe wound. It is better to start by cutting back the fronds as close to the thorns first, trimming from bottom to top. Cut a circle of fronds at the bottom

4 After the first cut, grasp a loose petiole on the trunk and tug on it gently to remove it. The petioles are the brown short leaves on the trunk. If the petiole does not remove easily by hand, do not forcefully remove it; allow it to remain until it pulls away easily in the future. Remove all loose petioles from the trunk.

5 Use the loppers to remove all palm fronds that are dead, yellowing or broken. It is better to start by cutting back the fronds as close to the thorns first, trimming from bottom to top. Cut a circle of fronds at the bottom then work your way up and around the tree. Trim the fronds close to the trunk, and cut at a 45 degree angle from the bottom front to the upper back. This will allow the nutrients to reach developing and healthy leaves instead of supplying withering leaves and fronds.

6 Cut off all palm flowers and their fruit stalks with pruning shears. Make clean cuts at the base of flower stems and stalks without cutting into the palm tree trunk. Mature fruit can be a food source for unwanted pests such as birds and rodents. This will also reduce the growth of new infertile date palms that seed themselves from the fruit.
