When my face twitches, how do you know if I winked? Or maybe it was just a twitch? Clifford Geertz is here to help us interpret this and other differences of meaning with his method of "thick description" (a term borrowed from the philosopher Gilbert Ryle). Based on this approach, Geertz develops his highly influential definition of religion -- a definition that would go largely unchallenged until the critique leveled by Talal Asad.
The lecture includes discussion of Franz Boas, Ruth Benedict, Talcott Parsons, thin and thick description, traditional and rationalized religion, and more.
