The effects of food insecurity are inescapable for many, and women are disproportionately impacted. They are overrepresented in unpaid and seasonal agriculture jobs, constituting 43% of the agricultural labor force, yet grossly underrepresented in leadership and decision-making roles. And yet, we know that women hold the key to unlocking a food-secure future. Studies have shown that giving women producers equal access to productive resources would increase their yields by 20-30%, thereby reducing the number of hungry people by 12–17% globally.
To celebrate World Food Day, we showcased four inspiring projects on Food Security Solutions led and implemented by Southeast Asian women leaders from the 2024 YSEALI Women's Leadership Academy.
Featured Food Security Solutions:
1. Mushagana: Bountiful Harvests, Empowering the Women and Youth, worked to distribute oyster mushroom fruiting bags to sugarcane farmers in the Philippines to diversify income and address vulnerabilities.
2. Nourished Mind, Healthy Future created engaging storybooks to educate children about healthy eating, local agriculture, and food security in ASEAN to combat NCDs.
3. EcoMedia Farming focused on providing climate-smart agriculture knowledge through social media and handbooks to support Southeast Asian farmers.
4. Wisdom to Sustainable Agriculture promoted sustainable agriculture and supported farmers across the ASEAN region through comic series, infographics, and videos.
